Brilliant article Beth - and timely for me because I've had a couple of surprise encounters with the Mission: Impossible theme in recent weeks.
Firstly, I went to New York City for the first time, and visited the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, where there's currently a Mission: Impossible exhibition. The exhibits include some original sheet music for the theme - I think they had both Schifrin's original and Danny Elfman's arrangement. I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture of that!
Secondly, shortly after reading your article, I was at London Waterloo station where they had a piano that anyone can play - and a guy was doing an amazing, jazzy rendition of the MI theme. He got a well-deserved round of applause. To a non-musician like me, playing that music seemed like a mission impossible in itself.

I wonder what was on the rest of that album…
Make a statement without saying a word!!! Holy hell I was not ready for that flashback. Love it.
And now about the actual piece; loved it! :)
