I am from Germany and your pronunciation of the German words hurt my ears. Although the story may be of interest to some, with a little bit of effort you could have tried to nail the pronunciation of the world Luftballon correctly by trying to listen how to speak it. It is not that difficult to speak it correctly. There are tools out there to use. That would have impressed me. Instead of saying that your German is bad you could have nailed it.
Those few German words that you spoke would not have cost you that much time but would make it a better story.
Having said that I think most German people did not know what the song was about and how it came about. You dig into it and that is a plus.
I remember many, many years ago, I traveled to Germany and was picked up at the airport by a family member. When we were on the road to our destination the song 99 Luftballons (correct spelling) was played. It was Music to my Ears because I really do not like many German songs. But this one stood out. I will never forget how it made me feel although I really had no clue what it really was supposed to say but it brought a lot of energy into the person that listened to it.
